Operation Medicine Drop Coming to an Ingles Near You

The Henderson County Sheriff's Office is making plans for Operation Medicine Drop, a free public service that will allow people to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medicines, both prescription and over-the-counter. The event will take place from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, March 20, at three area Ingles locations.

Deputies will be located in front of the Ingles stores located on Highland Lake Road, U.S. 64 in Etowah and U.S. 64 at Howard Gap Road. According to the Sheriff's Office, problems can arise whenever there are unused and expired drugs in the home. Accidental poisoning can occur if children ingest the medications. It is estimated that about 40 percent of poisonings among children happen in the home of grandparents.

Sheriff Rick Davis said a similar operation was held last year, and the event was well-received by the community. "Our officers have a protocol to follow to safely collect and dispose of these items," Davis said. "We always enjoy the interaction with the public that these operations allow."

The Fletcher Police Department will also be participating in Operation Medicine Drop at the same time and date. Town officers will be located outside the Ingles on U.S. 25 North in Fletcher.
