Businesses Teaming Up To Grant Prom Wishes

Anyone out there with a formal gown hanging in the back of the closet has the power to make a young girl's prom wishes come true.

Three Henderson County businesses - Miller's Dry Cleaning, the Beehive resale store and Summit Marketing Group - are teaming up for the third time to hold the Grant Her Wish prom promotion. Miller's is now accepting gently-used evening, formal, prom and bridesmaid gowns in all sizes. The dresses will be cleaned free of charge and donated to the Grant Her Wish event, scheduled for April 10 and 11.

The dress donations will allow girls to go to the Beehive on Main Street on those two days and find a prom dress free of charge.

Tamara Miller of Miller's Dry Cleaning said Grant Her Wish was started to help young couples defray some of the increasing costs associated with prom.

"We have a son in high school, and going to prom is expensive," she said. "Sometimes I think it's just as expensive for girls as it is for guys because prom dresses are very expensive. We were looking for a way to recycle the gowns and make them available to the girls."

Miller said they hope to receive between 300 and 400 dresses, and there are still some dresses available that were left over from last year. Miller said the event has grown with each year.

"Last year was bigger than the first year, and I expect this year to be bigger than the other two years," she said.

Tamara's husband, Jeff, said dresses are already rolling into the two Miller's locations at King Street in downtown Hendersonville and Brevard Road in Laurel Park.

"We'll probably clean several hundred," Jeff said. "We've got it up on our sign right now, and I was out at Laurel Park, and a lady brought in five or six very nice gowns. We're glad to get them, but what we need are the larger gowns. We get a lot of the medium, average size gowns, but I know we always have a few girls who just need a larger gown, and that's what were always short of."

Girls interested in finding a dress for prom can go to the Beehive resale store on Main Street between 4 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, April, 10, and from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, to choose a gown. Due to donations and volunteers at last year's event, 70 girls were provided dresses for prom.
