The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site will celebrate Carl Sandburg’s Pulitzer Prize winning biography of Abraham Lincoln with “Carl Sandburg and Abraham Lincoln: Civil War to Civil Rights” Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Throughout the event there will be special house tours highlighting Connemara’s antebellum history, costumed re-enactors portraying Civil War era soldiers and civilians, grounds tours showing historic features of the antebellum property, live music and children’s activities.
As an added bonus, the event will feature an opportunity for visitors to interact with a professional Lincoln presenter.
Carl Sandburg felt a kinship with Lincoln’s quest to bring equality to the people, and Sandburg himself explored the challenges facing America through his poetry and writings in the 20th century. His Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Abraham Lincoln’s war years explores Lincoln’s reaction to the causes of the war and the challenges he faced during it.
Visitors will gain a greater understanding of the role both of these men played as they lived through or captured the essence of the Civil War and their efforts to bring about civil rights. Young visitors will have an opportunity to play period games and meet Abraham Lincoln.
This event is part of the National Park Service’s observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War and is supported by the National Park Service, Eastern National who operates the park’s bookstore and the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara.
The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service, is located three miles south of Hendersonville off U.S. 225 on Little River Road. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For further information, please phone 693-4178 or visit www.nps.gov/carl
