The City of Hendersonville has received a Certified Local Government Grant from the State Historic Preservation Office of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources for the preparation of a National Register of Historic Places nomination for Oakdale Cemetery.
Established in 1885, the 20.8 acre cemetary near Sixth Avenue West was placed on the state’s National Register Study List in October 2011 and contains approximately 5,400 marked graves with a wide range of monument types as well as an octagonal pavilion that appears to date from the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.
City officials are considering a project that will include the survey and research necessary to provide supporting documentation for the National Register nomination by March 2013.
