Pardee Hospital and Park Ridge Health were recently awarded the Partners in Public Health Distinguished Group Award for their shared role in time, service, and monetary contributions that allowed the Department of Public Health to purchase flu vaccine for Henderson County’s school children in October 2010.

“We could not have done this public service without the help of our valuable community partners,” said Henderson County Public Heath Director Tom Bridges. “Because of Pardee Hospital and Park Ridge Health’s generosity and with earnings from some other flu immunization clinics, a total of 1700 vaccines were made available to children who would have otherwise had to pay or go without.”

The two hospitals received their awards at the North Carolina Public Health Association’s 2011 Annual Education Conference held September 21-23 at the Charlotte Hilton University Place.

In October 2009, the Department of Public Health administered over 3,100 free flu vaccines from the NC Immunization Branch to all Henderson County students. The Health Department had an overwhelming response from parents to these clinics held at the four middle grade schools.

In 2010 due to financial cutbacks, the Immunization Branch could provide free flu vaccine to only Vaccine For Children eligible children. The school flu immunization clinics would not be able to take place.

Park Ridge Health and Pardee Hospital representatives responded to the cutbacks by agreeing to donate their revenue from a mass adult immunization clinic to the Health Department for the purchase of vaccine for Henderson County students.

On Sept. 16-17, 2010, Pardee Health Education Center donated space, staff, and resources to provide a central location for a mass adult flu immunization clinic. Park Ridge Health also donated nurses, clerical support, and other resources. The revenue raised and donated from that clinic along with earnings from smaller adult flu immunization clinics combined to purchase 1,700 vaccines. With the vaccine provided from the NC Immunization Branch and the donation from Park Ridge Health and Pardee Hospital, over 3,000 doses of flu vaccine were made available to  county students.
