Wingate University Pharmacy School Coming to Downtown

If you're a Hendersonville resident interested in becoming a pharmacist, you're in luck. A school offering just such a program will soon open in your backyard.

Actually, it's coming to the downtown area thanks to Wingate University, a private university near Charlotte, that plans to start a pharmacy program at 220 Fifth Avenue. The two-story, 11,000 square-foot space will be home to a pharmacy program that is expected to open, pending final accreditation approval, in the fall 2011.

Plans are also moving forward for Wingate to offer the Master of Business Administration and Master of Physician Assistant Studies at the Hendersonville campus, pending approvals by their respective accrediting agencies. The MBA program could start as soon as the summer of 2011.

Building renovations will begin next month with completion expected by August.

Wingate's Vice President for Business and CFO Chuck Taylor said most of the facility meets the university's needs, but it will require some improvements for distance education and a new laboratory for the pharmacy program.

"We're pleased to find such an appropriate location for our School of Pharmacy and other programs in the heart of downtown Hendersonville," Said Taylor.

Wingate is a private university founded in 1896 with more than 2,300 students on two campuses in Wingate and Matthews, N.C. It offers 32 undergraduate majors, 36 minors and career concentrations, numerous pre-professional programs, graduate degrees in business, accounting, physician assistant studies and sports administration, and doctorates in pharmacy and education.
