Television Takeover
By Leigh Wills
Hendersonville got taken over Thursday morning – by a television crew.
The city and a good-sized crowd of its residents got up pretty early and put on their best faces as Fox Carolina’s morning show broadcast live from in front of the Historic Henderson County Courthouse. The broadcast from 7 to 9 am was part of the station’s Town Takeover series where anchors Cody Alcorn and Margaret Burnquist shine a spotlight on area towns and cities. Thursday was Hendersonville’s turn to show a television audience all that it has to offer.
Mayor Barbara Volk didn’t seem to mind that her city was briefly taken over. The exposure, she said, is just what Hendersonville needs.
“We hope it will get some folks up here,” she said. “The idea is to promote the area, promote what we have available in town here and hope that all the folks that watch TV this morning will come on up and take advantage of all the things we have.”
Volk said city staff, particularly Lu Ann Welter in the Planning Department, along with Henderson County Travel and Tourism, the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Hendersonville Inc. all worked together to organize the many people and organizations that got a few minutes of face time before the cameras.
“It was a lot of work in a short amount of time,” Volk said.
Among the organizations featured on the morning show were the Curb Market, Daddy D’s, Hands On!, Skyland Performing Arts Center's Betty and Beau Wedding Show, Flat Rock Playhouse, Chalk It Up, the North Carolina Apple Festival, Pat’s School of Dance, Henderson County heritage Museum, Historic Flat Rock and Square 1 Bistro.
