Survivor Helps Henderson County Remember Pearl Harbor
With help from a South Carolina veteran who survived Peal Harbor, Henderson County paused Tuesday to remember the surprise attack that launched the United States into World War II.
The Pearl Harbor Commemorative Committee held its annual Pearl Harbor Day ceremony, featuring the winner of the Vince Colan Memorial Award essay contest winner, Kelly N. Walker, a student at North Henderson High school. Among those present at the ceremony was the guest speaker, Clarence Busch, 93, who was a spry 24-year-old Navy man stationed in Hawaii when the attack happened.
"I was sleeping in like most sailors do on a Sunday morning, and all of a sudden I heard an explosion," Busch said. "I looked out the window, and that whole aircraft hangar behind the barracks was in flames. They cut loose one explosion after another, dropping bombs all on the battleships."
Check back later to read more on Busch's experiences at Pearl Harbor.
