Sidewalk Masterpieces
By Leigh Wills
Downtown Hendersonville was the place to be Saturday morning. Actually, it was the place to draw.
The 14th annual Chalk It Up! drew 150 artists of all ages to the sidewalks along Main Street where each was given a box of colored chalk and a concrete square to create an outdoor masterpiece. As usual, the artistic creations were varied. There were whimsical fairies, horses, bunnies and cats, portraits, abstract images and even a blue Avatar.
Barbara Hughes, founder and organizer of the annual art contest, was pleased with this year’s entries.
“I think the 14th annual Chalk It Up! Was the best ever. I guess I think that every year, but people really brought their A game,” she said. “It really is impressive.”
Hughes said the kids especially made this year’s event memorable. While handing out prizes in front of her shop, Narnia Studios, Hughes said the 9-12 age group comprised a third of the total number of artists.
The Chalk It Up! winners by age category were:
5 and under – Katherine Kelsch, Jonah Lanzetta, MacKenzie Barratt, Molli Clark and Phinneas Smith.
6-8 – Katherine Downs, Grace Kelsch, Zoe Capps, Nora Lacy and Sierra Wallace.
9-12 – Nicole Wellborn, Liberty Schultz, Ryan Harper, Quinn Kelsch and Liam McBride.
13-20 – Kristen Brown, Allison Gardner, Sam Benson, Olga Skowronek and Alisia Guerrero.
21 and over – Rachel Benney, Pam Gessler, Johanna Fitzgerald, Bethany Gessler and Tomoko Kobayashi.
