The Apple Valley Model Railroad Club invited the public to Hendersonville's Historic Train Depot on Wednesday to view the club's massive model railroad.
If you had a toy train as a child, the model railroad is not to be missed and will likely cause you to want to go find your old trains. Encompassing several rooms inside the depot, the HO model railroad represents Hendersonville and Western North Carolina with a multitude of trains making their way across bridges, through tunnels, and up hills. The 50-plus member club has built a layout that is astounding in its details. The trains make their way past tiny power poles, cars , people, and animals. They've even rigged a camera on one of the trains that lets you view the layout as if you were a passenger.
Various club members are on hand making sure the trains are running properly and answering questions from the public. Members also let the kids take the controls of a train through a remote control. The best part for many of the kids is the #2 button, which sounds the engine's horn as it approaches a highway crossing.
In case you missed Wednesday's special open house, a second one will be held on Wednesday, December 29, from 10am to 4pm. The depot is also open Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. You can also learn more about the club and its layout by clicking on the video here.
