Sandburg Home to Display Rarely-Seen Items, Seeks Volunteers
The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site has installed a new exhibit case that will allow visitors to view rarely-seen objects related to the famous writer.
The museum exhibit case inside the bookstore at the historic home will feature the Presidential Medal of Freedom given to Sandburg in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson; Sandburg's Pulitzer Prizes; memorabilia relating to celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis and Gene Kelly; and original art from artists like Hokusai, Edward Steichen and others.
Currently on exhibit is one of Sandburg's Washburn bell-shaped guitars (circa 1928). The guitar is one of six presented to Sandburg by the Chicago-based company Lyon & Healy. He often played the guitar in publicity photos, including the photograph on the cover of his record album, The American Songbag. The guitar will be on display until October 8.
Officials at the Sandburg Home also announced they are seeking volunteers to work in the barn area and with the education program. Barn volunteers will feed and groom descendants of Mrs. Sandburg's goats, clean the barn, and interact with the general public and youth groups. Barn volunteers can also work with the education program to provide farm-based curriculum programs for youth.
All volunteers will get training, and experience is helpful but not necessary.
