Organizations Provide Hearty Breakfasts For Apple Festival

If you're heading to the Apple Festival this weekend, three local organizations will make sure your belly is full before you spend your day enjoying the sights and sounds along Main Street. Just be sure to save some room for all the apples you'll be buying and eating.

The Kiwanis Club of Hendersonville, the Hendersonville Lions, and the Hendersonville Elks Lodge are all organizing breakfast spreads that will raise money for each organization's charitable endeavors. First up is the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast on Friday from 7 to 10 am at the Hendersonville First Baptist Church on the corner of 4th Avenue and Washington Street. Saturday morning's Big Apple Country Breakfast, courtesy of the Hendersonville Lions, is from 7 to 10:30 am at the First Baptist Church. On Sunday, it's the Elks' turn to start your day off right with a breakfast at the Elks Lodge on Justice Street from 7 am to noon.

For $6, the Kiwanis Club will provide you with a pancake breakfast including bacon, grits, cooked apple slices with cinnamon and brown sugar, apple juice, coffee and milk. The Apple Festival brochure promises "generous portions for all."

"This is one of or major fundraisers for the scholarship fund. We will be serving our famous pancakes and our even more delicious grits and bacon and stewed apples," said Susanne Best, Kiwanis secretary. "We have served up to 1,000 in the past, so we wouldn't be at all surprised if we served those numbers again. We do kick off the Apple Festival, so people can have breakfast with us and then go to the opening ceremony."

The money raised through the breakfast will help deserving students further their education. Best said Kiwanis tries to annually give four scholarships of at least $5,000 each "so that it would cover one year's tuition at an in-state four-year college."

In addition to the scholarships, Kiwanis also funds a shoes and socks program that provides new footwear for children in need. To learn more about Kiwanis, call 828-697-4267.

Big is the right word to describe the Lions Club Big Apple Country Breakfast on Saturday. Not only is the breakfast big, with eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, gravy, biscuits, apples, coffee and juice, but the breakfast also includes a Big Apple contest. Awards will be handed out to apples based on weight, and there is no cost to enter the contest. All apples must be grown in Henderson County. The breakfast costs $6 per person.

Like Kiwanis, Lions President Fred Huscher said this is his club's major fundraiser of the year. He expects at least 850 people will drop by the event, which has been held for more than 20 years. The money raised from the breakfast will be used to improve the quality of life of those who may not be able to afford proper eye care. The Lions also support a number of other causes, such as Scouting, 4-H, youth baseball and a future leaders program.

Huscher said the breakfast is a great way to enjoy good food and good company before heading out to the Apple Festival. "We get great participation from our Lions. We have some of the local Scouts involved. It's just kind of a win-win," he said. "The majority of our money that we make and spend in Henderson County goes for things like eye exams, eye glasses, providing white canes. That's our real focus."

The final Apple Festival breakfast will be Sunday from 7 am to noon at the Elks Lodge, located at 546 N. Justice Street. Again, people can expect plats piled high with pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, gravy, biscuits, apples, coffee and juice. The cost is $7 each with children under 6 free.

Kristie Cantrell with the Hendersonville Elks said proceeds from the breakfast go to support Elks Charities. "It's a huge, huge breakfast," she said. "We've got pancakes, sausage, eggs, the whole nine yards."

Cantrell said she expects 1,000 people will make their way to the lodge for breakfast. "It's a lot of cooking," she said.
