Mainstay is known across the area for helping people who are the victims of domestic violence by offering them shelter and a variety of programs and services. This weekend, Mainstay is there for the frazzled Christmas shopper.
On Friday, volunteers at Mainstay's Purple Ribbon Thrift Store were wrapping gifts for downtown shoppers. Mainstay encouraged donations to help women and children who cannot be at home this Christmas.
"We partnered with downtown Hendersonville to participate in what was going on with 12 Days of Christmas," said Tanya Blackford, Mainstay's executive director. "Sunday we're doing cookies and cocoa at the Historic Courthouse. We just wanted to raise awareness about us and participate in what's going on downtown."
Blackford said the holiday offer also helped the Mainstay staff and volunteers get a jump on the holiday gift wrapping they do every year for clients. Mainstay has a giving tree inside the Purple Ribbon where people can select a need from the tree and supply that gift. On Friday, there were still plenty of needs left on the tree.
"We really encouraged everybody to not wrap their presents for clients this year, and so we decided that since we were already doing the gift wrap we would just go ahead and organize the gifts and have volunteers wrap them while we're here," she said.
With this being the last full weekend of shopping before Christmas, there's sure to be a few tired shoppers out there. If you've maxed out your credit cards buying gifts, then head to the Historic Courthouse between 1 and 3pm where Mainstay will be there to comfort you with some complimentary holiday cookies, tea and cocoa. Children can also decorate their cookies. Mainstay will be handing out 50 percent off coupons good for that day at the Purple Ribbon. The store will be open from 1 to 5pm and is located on the corner of Fifth and Church.
Money brought in through Thrift Store sales goes to support Mainstay. For more information, visit www.mainstayhelp.org.
