The town of Laurel Park held its annual Christmas Celebration on Sunday evening on a cold night that set the perfect mood for the start of the holiday season inside the town.
As a few dozen people huddled around the gazebo at Laurel Green Park, the kids of the Flat Rock Playhouse YouTheatre entertained with a few holiday favorites. Santa was there passing out candy canes to both young and old. And before it was over everyone got to warm up with some hot apple cider and cookies.
The celebration was all thanks to the Laurel Park Civic Association, an organization that's been around for decades.
"It's actually been in existence about 51 years, so it's been around a long time," said Bob Thrower, the association's president. "It's for all the residents of Laurel Park, part-time or full-time, and we just have a whole lot of projects going on throughout the course of the year."
In addition to the Christmas celebration, the association does an Easter program, town cleanups, a town employee Christmas dinner, and hosts historical dinners where various speakers discuss the town's history. "Laurel Park has got a lot of fabulous history to it," Thrower said.
Just this past summer, the association started a concert series at Jump Off Rock called Bluegrass on the Rock. The series revives a tradition of concerts at Jump Off that started in the 1950s, Thrower said.
"We've got a whole lot of programs we're doing," Thrower said. "We've been doing the Christmas celebration several years, and the YouTheatre kids have been here the last four or five years. It's a lot of fun."
