Go buy some apples. That was the message speaker after speaker delivered Friday morning during the opening ceremony for the 64th annual N.C. Apple Festival.
Apple Board President Jim Kastetter assured the crowd this year's crop produced plenty of fruit for people to take home and enjoy. A highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of the Henderson County Apple Grower of the Year award to J.H. Stepp, who has been growing apples in Henderson County since 1933. At nearly 91 years old, Stepp said he is proud of the fact that he gets out of bed every day and goes to work.
The four-day festival runs through Labor Day and ends with the King Apple Parade on Monday afternoon.
