Give Your Fellow Taxpayers a Hand
If you know your way around a computer and can pass the required testing, a volunteer opportunity awaits you helping people complete their tax returns.
The AARP Tax-Aide, a free income tax preparation service offered every year, is currently seeking new volunteers. The organization, which will operate out of space at the Blue Ridge Mall from January 31 to April 15, 2011, provides complete tax preparation that is free of charge to all qualified taxpayers. The service is primarily aimed at those with low to middle incomes and people aged 60 and up. The service is administered nationwide by the AARP Foundation and is sponsored by AARP and the IRS.
Training for volunteer preparers will be provided in early January. To be a preparer with the AARP Tax-Aide, trainees must be familiar with operating a computer and must pass certification testing and complete a computer exercise on IRS software. Tax preparers work in teams a minimum of two, four -hour supervised shifts each week. Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member.
Anyone who might be interested in volunteering and would like to learn more can attend an orientation meeting. Potential volunteers will learn about the program, the training and certification process, and the work environment. The meeting will take place from 2 to 3:30pm on Wednesday, October 20, at the Henderson County Library's Kaplan Auditorium.
If you would like to learn more information before the meeting, call Joe Mullen, the local Tax Aide office coordinator, at 828-692-6069 or 828-489-1554.
