The night may been cold, but the warmth of the Christmas season was evident at Fletcher Community Park on Friday evening. Several dozen people bundled up in coats, gloves and scarves gathered around a small stage at the park to listen to Christmas carols performed bluegrass style and to watch the lighting of the town's Christmas tree.

Mayor Bill Moore invited a child up from the audience and together they threw the switch to light the town tree. The mayor reminded the crowd what Christmas is all about.

"I was thinking at Thanksgiving, eating dinner with the family, of how blessed we are to live in the world that we do. We've got so much to be thankful for," Moore said. "Christmas is a special time of the year. It's all about family. It's not about giving gifts. It's about loving your neighbor."

The tree lighting ceremony, sponsored by the town and the Fletcher Area Business Association, included coffee, hot chocolate and cookies. The bluegrass band Appalachian Fire performed several Christmas carols. The children were invited to the stage to listen to one of the band members read Twas the Night Before Christmas. The bluegrass band then broke into Santa Claus is Coming to Town just before the man himself arrived at the park via police escort. The children each got a chance to tell Santa their Christmas wishes.

Fletcher has another major holiday event planned. The town's Christmas parade, with the theme, It's A Reel Christmas, is Saturday, December 11, at 10:30am. Participants are asked to decorate their float in recognition of their favorite Christmas movie.
