Fletcher Relay for Life to Help Fight Cancer
By Leigh Wills
People in Fletcher will team up this weekend to fight cancer.
Fletcher Community Park will be the setting for a Relay for Life event benefiting the American Cancer Society and, more specifically, people right here in Henderson County who have been diagnosed with cancer.
“It is the American Cancer Society’s premier fundraiser for the community,” said Betty Henn, the event’s chairman. “The funds go for research, patient services and early detection measures. A large portion of the money does stay in the county. We are anticipating being able to help at least 300 cancer patients this year out of Henderson County.”
The Fletcher Relay for Life begins Friday at 5 pm with a live auction, At 6 pm, the opening ceremony begins, and luminaries will be lit around 9pm. The Fourth of July may have passed, but Fletcher Relay officials aren’t letting that fact stop them from lighting up the nighttime sky.
“Fireworks sponsored by the Town of Fletcher will be at 9:30,” Henn said. “We’ll have live music and games and all kinds of activities for the young and the old all evening long. We’ll be playing bingo after the fireworks.”
The live auction will be run by Bagwell Auctions of Fletcher. Items people can bid on include a stay at a bed and breakfast, professional teeth whitening, and various gift certificates.
The event lasts all night, and Henn said there will also be plenty of food and raffles. A total of 30 teams representing area businesses, churches, nonprofits, families and other organizations are participating.
“There’s just going to be a lot of things going on all night long,” she said. “All the money raised on site will go to the Relay.”
The Fletcher Relay for Life is hoping to raise $101,000. “We’re almost to half that now,” Henn said.
Henn said the Relay needs people willing to volunteer their time to help with a variety of tasks, particularly traffic and parking.
“We’ll put them to work for whatever amount of time they can donate,” Henn said.
People wanting to volunteer or find out more information about the Relay for Life can call Henn at 828-684-2636.
