British Invasion Coming To Jackson Park

If a vintage MG or a sleek Jaguar gets your motor running over a Ford or Chevy, then Jackson Park is where you need to be this weekend.

The British Car Club of Western North Carolina will meet on Saturday for the 11th annual Autumn in the Mountains, a gathering of automobile enthusiasts whose hearts lie with cars manufactured across the pond.
“Typically we get around 100 cars ranging from, of course, the MGs and Triumphs. We’ve had Lotus, Morgans, Sunbeam, Jaguar. One of our members has a DeLorean,” said Carole Carter, who handles publicity for the show. “Everything British you can think of is usually there. We have a big contingent that comes up from South Carolina and Georgia, and we’ve had cars as far away as Portland, Oregon, make the trip. It’s just a cool show.”
There is no admission to attend the show, so you can bring the entire family out and just wander and admire the many unique autos on display.
Autumn in the Mountains is more than just a car show. It’s a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels in Buncombe and Henderson counties. In addition to registration fees for the autos, there is a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle that brings in money for the charities.
“Every penny we raise over and above the cost of putting on the show will go to Meals on Wheels,” she said. “We also have sponsors to help defray the cost of the show, so just about everything we make goes to those two charities.”
Carter hopes the show can raise about $1,500 for each of the county Meals on Wheels programs.
Registration for the show is from 8:30am-12pm, and the car show on the meadows runs from 10am-3:30pm. At 4pm, there will be an afternoon drive time for the car enthusiasts.
The British Car Club of WNC has about 50 households as members, and it’s not too hard to imagine which cars they have sitting in the garage.
“Of those 50 households, most of them have at least one British car, and a bunch of us have two,” she said. “Some of us have more than that.”
The group holds regular meetings on the first Tuesday of every month at the J&S Cafeteria across from the Asheville Regional Airport. The meetings start with dinner at 6pm.
“I would invite anyone to come,” Carter said of the meetings.
