Brainstorming Planned for Southside Park
Local design professionals will be coming together for one day to help guide Hendersonville's development of Southside Park. The meeting, which is open to the public, will include landscape architects, recreation specialists and architects, all of whom are donating their time to help the city "dream big for the future of this key city property," City Manager Bo Ferguson says in a press release.
The city adopted a plan for the park three years ago that called for soccer fields, a fitness trail and a dog park on a parcel of land located between South Grove Street and Spartanburg Highway. The city has applied for grant funds to build the park, but those applications have come up short due to the highly competitive nature of the grant process, Ferguson says.
"In preparing for another grant submission, the City Council decided to reconsider the design of the park to acknowledge changes that have taken place since the first concept was adopted," Ferguson's release said. "One of the biggest factors is the recent announcement of a major new soccer complex to be built in the Fletcher area, which the city believes may be a more suitable location for soccer fields than this site. The frequent flooding in the vicinity of the Southside Park would make it very difficult to maintain a quality playing surface for competitive soccer, and the land is not big enough for competition-size fields."
The design charette will take place Thursday, July, 29, from 8am to 5pm at the City Operations Center at 305 Williams Street. The day will start with City Council, staff and others giving designers their ideas and vision for the land. The designers will then work in teams to create ideas for different aspects of the park. The ideas will be presented in the future to City Council.
