Artist Rowan Farrell Exhibits New Series at Jongo Java

Rowan Farrell is bringing her latest artistic creations to Jongo Java for a month-long show.

Farrell’s series of original mixed media paintings, titled Curandera de la Cocina (Healer from the Kitchen), opens Friday night with a reception from 6 to 8pm. Jongo Java is located at 117 South Main St., in downtown Hendersonville.

A former midwife, Farrell said of her colorful series, “It’s rooted in the Wise Woman traditions, an ancient prehistorical lineage of healing, birth practices and Shamanism and women’s ability in particular to tap into the transcendental and the fact that this ability has been suppressed and repressed for hundreds of years now.”

Jongo Java has 11 of Farrell’s paintings on exhibit. Everyone is invited to drop by and take a look during the exhibit that runs for a month.

“It’s multi-media. There’s lots of collage and various types of mark-making, but layers and layers of collage,” she said.

Farrell says she’s re-emerging as an artist after practicing midwifery and holistic healthcare for the last 15 years. After exhibiting in Atlanta 15 years ago, Farrell said she was ready “to take art off the wall” and bring it into her life through her work as a midwife. She says her life has now come full circle. She recently was awarded a regional artist grant from the N.C. Arts Council, funding that will go toward a spring exhibit with 20 new paintings.

She jokes that she’s “no longer catching babies” and creates art about three-quarters of her time. The remaining quarter is spent being a mom to three kids.

“I was really ready to paint again. I’ve been working on this series about two and a half years,” she said.
