'Tis the Weekend ... for a Bunch of Holiday Fun
Christmas may still be three weeks away, but this weekend will certainly help get you in the spirit of the season.
Events this weekend include downtown Hendersonville's 12 Days of Christmas, the local merchants association's Christmas parade, Christmas at Johnson Farm, a gingerbread cookie contest, Flat Rock's holiday market and more.
Drop in on some of these happenings or, if you're feeling up to the challenge, go ahead and pencil them all into your weekend schedule. Good luck.
* From 1 to 4 pm Friday and 10 am to 2pm Saturday, bring your dogs and cats to the Henderson County Animals Services facility on Stoney Mountain Road and have their pictures taken in holiday attire. The photography sessions are a fundraiser for Animal Services.
* Narnia Studios will announce the winners and display the top entries in its annual gingerbread cookie contest this weekend. Narnia is at 315 North Main Street.
* Flat Rock Playhouse continues its holiday productions this weekend with It's a Wonderful Life at the Historic Henderson County Courthouse and A Christmas Carol on the main stage in Flat Rock. Call 828-693-0731 for ticket information.
* The town of Fletcher flips the switch on its town Christmas tree Friday evening at 5:30 at Fletcher Community Park. Santa will be there, and Christmas carols will be sung bluegrass style. Everyone is asked to make a nonperishable food donation.
* Hands On! and the Henderson County Heritage Museum are partnering so that children make corn husk dolls Friday at 5 pm at the children's museum at 318 North Main Street. Call 828-697-8333.
* Downtown Hendersonville merchants will dress in costume Friday evening, offering refreshments, entertainment, carriage and trolley rides and carolers. The Visitors Information Center on South Main Street will also hold an open house.
* The Flat Rock Tailgate Market will hold a special Christmas market Saturday at 2pm behind Little Rainbow Row on the Greenville Highway. The vendors will offer a variety of holiday gift items.
* Across town, you can drop by the Rugby Craft Fair on Saturday at Rugby Middle School to pick up a few more holiday gifts. The school is located at 3345 Haywood Road.
* At 11am Saturday, Hendersonville merchants host the annual Christmas parade down Main Street with the theme Celebrating Christmas Now and Then. This year's parade has close to 90 entries.
* Historic Johnson Farm on Haywood Road hosts its annual fundraiser, Christmas at Johnson Farm, starting at 11am. There will be music, food, history lessons, games, crafts, and wagon rides. The admission fee is $5 for adults and $3 for children.
* If you want to get in shape, there's a way to do it and help a good cause. A Nia (non-impact aerobics) fundraiser will be on Saturday at 10:15am at the Henderson County YMCA. The event supports the Salvation Army's Christmas Cheer program. The cost is $10 suggested donation.
* At 1pm Saturday at the downtown gazebo, Santa will be available to take your Christmas wishes.
* Laurel Park, with help from the Flat Rock Playhouse YouTheatre, rings in the holidays at 5:30pm Sunday with a Christmas celebration at Laurel Green Park. Santa will be there, and everyone can enjoy hot cider and cookies at the park located at White Pine Drive and Fifth Avenue.
* The Hendersonville Community Band presents 'Tis the Season on Sunday at 3pm at Blue Ridge Community College's Blue Ridge Conference Hall. The cost is $10.
* Downtown Hendersonville's second Nonprofit Sunday features the local Shrine Club at 1pm in front of the Historic Henderson County Courthouse.
* Hands On! presents its second annual Reindeer Run 5K race and one-mile fun run on Sunday at Fletcher Community Park. The races are a benefit for the downtown Hendersonville children's museum. Registration starts at 1pm with the races set to start at 2 and 2:30pm.
