A Square Deal

Suppose one evening you're ambling around Hendersonville just dying for some Lusty Monk Mustard...or maybe some Dutch Kettle Jam. What will you do?
You will head directly over to Square One, the excellent restaurant that now occupies the space formerly known as the Gypsy Cab Company (another fine eatery, by the way), to the new Square One Market.
The market, occupying one of the restaurant's two storefronts (the one where you can gawk at the kitchen help doing their thing), offers Chef Joe Lewis' handmade sausages, salami, frankfurters, and soups, as well as some excellent steaks from the Apple Brandy Beef people in North Wilkesboro, and a whole roster of equally appealing local and regional delicacies. The chicken hails from Ashley Farms in Winston-Salem; the Sunburst Trout comes from Canton. Goat cheese arrives from Split Creek Farms in Anderson, SC. You get the idea...the place is designed to be a gourmet's playground. Plus, according to co-owner Lindsey Lewis, they'll soon offer a limited assortment of sundries such as aspirins and other difficult-to-find-in-downtown items.
The edible emporium is handling all of the restaurants to-go orders. Plans are underway to offer delivery in the downtown area.
Lindsey Lewis hastens to point out that "You can still see what they're doing in the kitchen, just like you could before."
You'll just have to watch over a counter and a deli case. In fact, the viewing may be enhanced if you happen to wander by when Chef Lewis is making some of his sausages, all of which, Lindsey assures us, are made from high quality pork with no nitrates or fillers.
Hours are 9am to 9pm Monday through Saturday.
